【田中宏幸教授のmμPSの解説】
muPS (muometric positioning system)とは相対論的素粒子を使って高精度に位置決めする技術です。ミュオメトリと呼ばれるこの新技術を使って、相対論的ミュオンが水中でもほぼ真空中の光速度で伝播することを利用して海水条件に依存しない位置決めを行います。この3次元位置決め技術はmuPSと称しており、GPSが対応できない水中だけでなく、地下でも位置決め出来るので、カーナビが通用しない地下でも作動します。利用シーンとして、破局火山といわれる巨大海中カルデラや地震の巣と考えられているプレート衝突域における動きを察知するなどが考えられます。海の中では電波が到達しないので陸上のように位置決めする事は容易でなく、新たな技術としての活用を期待できます。
muPS (muometric positioning system) is a technology for high-precision positioning using relativistic particles. This new technique uses the fact that relativistic muons propagate at virtually the speed of light in vacuum, even in water, to realize positioning in underwater/underground/indoor environments where GPS is unavailable. Potential applications include detecting movements in a submarine volcanoes and seafloor that can cause earthquakes.
