Muons\u2014tiny particles constantly raining down from space\u2014can be used to create extremely secure encryption keys. Researchers are exploring a communication method that takes advantage of this, known as COSMOCAT. When the same muon passes through both the sender\u2019s detector and the receiver\u2019s detector, and the distance between them is known precisely, the receiver can adjust for the muon\u2019s travel time and work out the sender\u2019s detection moment. This lets both sides generate matching encryption keys based on the same muon event, without sending any key information over the air.
