We used matrix-free LDI-TOF-MS to directly monitor this reaction on AuNR surfaces. Our analysis clearly identified residual CTAB, a PSS interaction intermediate, and the final thiolated PC. Combined with UV\u2013Vis\u2013NIR and zeta potential data, we elucidated the stepwise displacement mechanism.
