Department of Architecture

The Department of Architecture was established in 1967. Since then, the department has played an important role as a leading department in this field in the Kansai district. The location of the department, on the Senriyama campus, means that many buildings and sites in and around the former Japanese capitals of Kyoto and Nara are easily accessible, and this geographical advantage helps students to understand both traditional and modern Japanese culture from the viewpoint of architecture. Architecture, as both an art and a science, comprises aesthetic, social, and economic aspects as well as technical ones. The department accordingly offers many interdisciplinary subjects, so as to equip students to meet the requirements for qualification as a professional architect, urban planners, architectural engineers, and architectural researchers. These subjects are grouped into three categories: the Planning and History Group, which deals with planning, design, history, and theory, the Structural Engineering Group, covering structural principles, analysis, and construction technology, and the Environmental Engineering Group, which deals with such environmental sciences as lighting, acoustics, heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning. The department maintains close links with the Architectural Institute of Japan, through a variety of academic research and practical work. The department also encourages students to enter design competitions and to take part in joint research programs with other institutions.
